The Ursuline Secondary School will this year stage one of the classics of musical theatre, Stephen Sondheim’s ‘West Side Story’. First staged in 1957, it is a modern retelling of William Shakespeare's ‘Romeo and Juliet’, set in 1950s New York City amidst a gripping turf war between two rival street gangs, the Jets and the Sharks. An unlikely romance blossoms between Tony, a Jet, and Maria, a Shark, but it is fraught with tension and danger, reflecting the deep cultural divisions and prejudices of the time. The story navigates themes of love, loyalty, and the quest for belonging, culminating in tragic consequences as violence erupts between the gangs. Through its iconic score, including songs like "Tonight" and "Somewhere," ‘West Side Story’ poignantly captures the struggles of young love against a backdrop of social strife, ultimately leaving audiences with a powerful message about the consequences of hatred and the hope for understanding and peace.
