After 43 years, the imminent return of Tom Molloy (Tom Grant) threatens to disturb the established household ruled by his estranged matriarchal wife, Madge (Mandy Culleton). His lengthy absence and sudden reappearance begin to cause consternation and confusion as he attempts to reconnect with their daughter, Maura (Susan D’Arcy) whom he has never met.

However, Maura has a different opinion to that of her bitter mother and views this return with curiosity and excitement. She sees this as an opportunity to include Tom in her future plans with her gaffe-prone beau, Martin Daly (Brendan Aherne). Adding to the daily torment inflicted by the neighbouring O’ Hora’s (Esther Delahunty and Ciara Hogan) Madge’s resentment grows as Tom starts to secure a place within the household. But Tom has many secrets, and one particular secret involves the parish priest, Fr McCoy (Pat Hennigan). His cautious participation as a go-between further complicates matters.
