In ancient times, Bealtaine was an important date in the Celtic calendar. The beginning of summer was rich in folklore, marked by the first day celebrated with joy and superstition. Agricultural rituals and traditions were performed to bless the crops and bring fruitful harvests and fires were lit from a ceremonial pyre, their ashes strewn to fertilise fields and bring luck to houses and their people. 

Some of these customs continued as our festivals were Christianised, but the stories now are seldom told, and some traditions are largely lost in time…

This Bealtaine, join Billy Duffy (really great tours) and Debbie McCole (The Sleepy Scholar) for a fun, family-friendly Féile na mBealtaine walking tour of the iconic Downpatrick Head in County Mayo. Hear the rich folklore associated with the ancient pagan festival and the strange, strongly held beliefs of our ancestors. Explore the stones, statues and relics of the iconic venue, hear the fascinating history of this important site, and celebrate Bealtaine together as the sun sets on the season….
